West Atherton

Overview

In the extraordinarily affluent town of Atherton, West Atherton might be the most opulent neighborhood around. It is prized for its expansive lots, stately homes, and innate privacy. Many of Silicon Valley’s elite residents make their homes in West Atherton. Depending on their address, students can attend public schools in one of three districts, although many choose private schools like Sacred Heart or Menlo School, which are located within the boundaries of this posh neighborhood.

West Atherton was settled in 1860 by the town’s founding father, Faxon Dean Atherton. The renowned Menlo Circus Club, which resides on the site of Faxon’s original home, is the center of Atherton’s social life, and features state-of-the-art equestrian facilities, tennis courts, pools, and a stunning clubhouse.

Living in West Atherton is expensive, with median home prices at $10 million or higher. Homes located on streets such as Selby Lane near the center of the neighborhood are the most expensive, and new homes are in especially high demand. The original homes are slowly being replaced my elaborate mansions, each grander than the last. But, despite the magnificent wealth of this community, residents still find West Atherton to be friendly and welcoming.
