Overview
The neighborhood of Professorville is famous not only for the Stanford professors who established it in 1891, but also for its emblematic significance. Now an official historic district, it is the home of the “HP Garage” where Hewlett-Packard was founded. Homes range from simple, pragmatic designs to the occasional mansion. Most of the local architecture is fairly traditional, but regardless of style, all Professorville homes exude a dignified character reminiscent of their inhabitants. The only disadvantage is that remodeling can be difficult, requiring various levels of approval before construction can begin.
Despite proximity to Downtown Palo Alto and Stanford University, Professorville retains a satisfying element of seclusion. Its tall houses and extremely tall trees effectively block out most of the outside world. The neighborhood also has superlative schools, and is both centrally located and easy to navigate—it’s bordered by Embarcadero Road, and the Bryant Street bike lane runs right through it.
The neighborhood is a testament to things imagined and built by brilliant people, from its quality homes to the history-making endeavors of its residents. Professorville is, and likely always will be, the heart of Palo Alto’s rich history, and a place where its people can explore extraordinary possibilities.
